Big Fish Games Online Game Community
Community Update

Ion Little Red may be new to the Big Fish Games Community but she’s not exactly a new fish in the sea. Her name is Emily and I had the chance to ask her a few questions.

Michelle: Hey there, Emily. Thank you for joining us today. Would you mind telling us how you broke into the chat monitoring profession?
Emily: Of course. A good friend of mine that works here at Big Fish Games used to tell me all the time how awesome the company is to work for. When I told her that I wanted to join the Big Fish crew, she referred me and I started out in Customer Support for the Downloadable Games section of our website. After some months, Brad (a.k.a. Ion Charlie) was looking for more people to moderate the community and thought I’d be a good fit – I love to talk! :)

Michelle: Right on. What’s your typical day at work like?
Emily: : I spend the first part of the day answering e-mails and then check for new ones periodically throughout the day in between moderating the chat rooms. Moderating means that I spend a lot of time doing my best to keep the peace and make sure nobody goes too crazy in the chat rooms! In between all of that I get to feed my addiction to L.O.B.E., which is a pretty sweet benefit.

Michelle: Is there anything unexpected you’ve experienced being a chat monitor?
Emily: Not too much – yet! I’ve spent a lot of time in forums and chat rooms in my life, so I know how crazy some people can get. Honestly, if anything, I’d say that I’m surprised by how nice most of the Community gamers are. I haven’t been moderating for that long but have already met some pretty awesome people and learned the names of some of the regulars.

Michelle: Could you say a bit about your background?
Emily: Well, I was born in Bellevue but spent most of my life in Woodinville. I love the Pacific Northwest and have lived here all of my life and can’t imagine living anywhere else. My dad’s side of the family is mostly European, and my mom’s side of the family is half Filipino and half European. Her side of the family is huge (she has 2 sisters, 6 brothers) and I have more cousins and second cousins than I can count ! Before coming here to Big Fish Games, I worked on the as a Game Tester for Microsoft.

Michelle: What do you do in your free time?
Emily: I like to read, go to movies (zombie flicks and comedies, especially) spend time with my friends, family, and fiancé and, of course, play games. I also love to swim, and I rock climb at an indoor climbing Gym at least once a week.

Michelle: Right on. I love to read too. Do you have any favorite genres?
Emily: Usually mostly sci-fi and fantasy (Neil Gaiman, Orson Scott Card) but I've been reading more "Horror" literature (Chuck Palahniuk, Elizabeth Kostova). Occasionally graphic novels as well. :)

Michelle: What would most people find surprising about you?
Emily: I’ve been a gamer since birth! My first system was an Atari 7800 (which I still have, though it needs some fixing) and I’ve ended up with quite a few other systems since then. I’m a bit of a collector! I don’t have any of the newer systems yet (360, Wii, PS3), but excluding duplicates I have a total of 10 consoles (8 are hooked up), 4 hand-held systems, not nearly enough games and not nearly enough time to play all of the ones that I have! I only just discovered how much fun the casual gaming world can be after I started working here at Big Fish Games - I’m a big fan of Hidden Object games.

I also have a weird obsession with nautical antiques.

Michelle: Whoa, that sounds awesome. Could you give us some examples?
Emily: I have a few glass fishing floats that I've collected, but I love old ship wheels, too - I just don't have any. The other weekend my fiancé and I were at an antique shop, and I fell in love with an antique brass diving helmet. I want one so bad!!
Michelle: That’s definitely the coolest hobby I’ve heard about in a while. Thank you for sharing!

Michelle: What are your favorite games?
Emily: I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for old console games, but I’ve become completely addicted to L.O.B.E! I’m also a big fan of Big Fish Slots, and Fairway Solitaire .

Michelle: Right on. Seems like everyone is quite crazy for L.O.B.E., and with good reason! Is there anything you’d like to say to all our loyal gamers?
Emily: Community gamers – Don’t be shy! We’re always here to help and are always happy to answer questions. Also, we need your help to keep the Big Fish Games Community fun and family friendly.

Emily: When we’re not around and you see somebody being rude or you see an inappropriate username, don’t be afraid to hit the Report button to let us know. Even if you’re not sure that what another user is doing is considered against the rules, if it makes you at all feel concerned or uncomfortable just click that Report button! The person in question can’t see that you did it and it’ll help us keep the rooms fun and safe for everybody.

Michelle: That’s great advice, Emily. I hope all our faithful fishes will take heed. Thank you again for chatting with us!
